Clancy: We need more affordable housing NOW

Queen’s Park – Kitchener Centre MPP Aislinn Clancy issued the following statement in response to the FAO Update on Homelessness Programs in Ontario.

“More and more people are experiencing homelessness in Ontario because they simply can’t keep up with rent. 

In Toronto’s recent Street Needs Assessment, 41 per cent of survey respondents said they were homeless because they could no longer afford housing. Twenty-two per cent said they had been evicted. 

And yet, despite repeated calls from experts, municipalities and people with lived experiences to create an evidence-based homelessness strategy, the Ford government has done nothing. 

If this continues, the FAO projects that another 12,118 people will experience homelessness by 2028-29. A shocking 16 per cent increase. 

This will result in more loss of lives, more suffering and an increased strain on our public services and local businesses.

It’s time for Doug Ford to stop dodging accountability for the homelessness crisis his own government created. Municipalities cannot continue to carry the burden of this alone. 

I am calling on the Ford government to urgently invest in building supportive, transitional and community housing and to take immediate action to protect renters from bad-acting landlords and illegal evictions and rent hikes.

We need to take action now to ensure everyone in Ontario has a safe and affordable place to live.”
